How To Know When Your Forklift Needs Servicing?

Forklift servicing and maintenance are essential to ensuring the machinery is working properly and is safe for the workplace and must be done on a regular basis

Forklifts are extremely useful pieces of equipment that are vital in ensuring warehouses and other workplaces run smoothly and stay organized. Forklifts are mainly used to transport heavy goods around a warehouse ensuring they are kept clear, well organised and easy to navigate.

Like any vehicle, forklifts require proper care and maintenance to ensure they are running well and remain safe for use. Regular upkeep is essential but sometimes you encounter unexpected problems. There are many signs to look out for that indicate your forklift may be due a service.

You should service your forklift annually to ensure it is running properly and safely. This should be done regardless of how long you have owned it. Proper upkeep can improve the longevity of the machinery and ensure it is working as well as possible for as long as possible.

This is especially important if you have just purchased a used forklift as well as you do not know if the previous owner has properly maintained the equipment. It is reccomended to have your forklift serviced prior to use if you buy it second-hand to ensure it is safe and fit for work.

Firstly, if you have any warning lights flashing it is a big indicator that something isn’t quite right. Just like you would with a car or van, you should take note of these warning lights and get them seen to as soon as possible.

Lights can sometimes turn on by mistake, however, it is important not to ignore them as issues can worsen if left unseen to and can put you and others in your workplace in danger.

If your forklift is making any unusual or strange noises such as clicking, grinding or whining signs it may be due to an issue with the mechanics of the equipment. This can be caused by a problem with the gears, bearings or even the wheels which can all be hazardous.

If you do notice any unusual sounds, get your forklift checked as soon as possible as you may end up injuring yourself if you continue to drive while issues are present.

Slowed movement or delayed response may also be a sign of a problem. Older machinery may be slower simply due to its age, however, it can also be a sign that the engine is failing. If you notice your forklift truck is struggling to move at its usual pace or lift heavy loads that it can usually handle, it is important to have it seen to.

Regular checks and maintenance will help to ensure these issues do not arise as they can usually be spotted and fixed prior to the problem worsening and posing a threat. Sometimes these issues will be missed though, so keeping an eye out for potential problems will help to make sure your workplace is as safe as possible.
